Servants to folly, creation, and the Lord JESUS CHRIST. We endeavor to give satisfaction

So, what was up with the capes?

April 14th, 2011 by John Mansfield

Driving home, the interview linked below came to mind, connected somewhat with my last entry. (“Spirit of Elijah Strikes Again!”) Something about the mellowness of age looking back fondly on the extravagances of youth. Is it with satisfaction or regret that Alan White tells us, “I never wore a cape”?

I have no clue what this video was all about, but capes are de rigeur in my line of work.

Great, now you have me thinking the mantle of Elijah was a cape. Left to Elisha so it wouldn’t get caught in the wheels of the chariot, says Edna Mode.

Edna Mode’s customers paid a price for her lack of vision. All the cape needs is a quick release fastener, so it pops right off if something or someone grabs it. Even some desert lizards have this basic concept figure dout.

The Fantastics did get a lot of other things right, making it probably my favorite Pixar film. The observations about the dangers of monologuing are classic.

I tried to keep conversation to a minimum while cutting down Obiwan, but I confess I monologued quite a bit with my son. But then we’re always being told to talk more with our kids, aren’t we?

I tried to take in a community production of the Fantasticks a week ago, but the show was sold out. Which was too bad, because a couple weeks before that, one of my children was ringing our two-note doorbell over and over, and it gave my a real hankering to hear The Girl doing that “follow, follow, follow, follow” bit in “Try to Remember.” So my aural hunger remains unsatisfied.

Er, yeah. It’s The Incredibles that got a lot of things right. If I could have another superpower, it would be photographic memory.

My closest contact with The Fantasticks was a long bull session with a friend in graduate school who had performed in it early in his musical career. He’s since performed in the Met. He’s also since come out of the closet as a homosexual. I was very pained by that.

It appears that capes are making a limited comeback.

Unfortunately.
