What Makes a Ruler: Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday

April 12th, 2009 by G.

President Uchtdorf reminded us that last Sunday was Palm Sunday.

Christ entered Jerusalem like its old kings did. We waved palm fronds, threw robes under his feet, and shouted hosannas. If we had not, the very stones would have cried out. Christ had popular acclaim.

A week later we killed him. That was President Uchtdorf’s point. Sic transit gloria mundi.

Since in a way vox populi is vox dei, Jerusalem proclaiming Jesus as our king probably meant something, a little. But Jerusalem’s hatred a week later meant more. When we killed him, we made him our king forever.

The tumult and the shouting dies.
The captains and the kings depart.
Still stands thine ancient sacrifice,
an humble and a contrite heart.
