Book rec: Win Bigly, by Scott Adams, $2 ebook.

February 21st, 2019 by Bookslinger

Temporarily reduced to $2 in Kindle ebook format.  Win Bigly is a recap of Adams’ blog posts, plus a little more, about Trump’s persuasion/hypnosis/negotiating tactics.

There are four books needed to understand how Trump is operating:

1. How to Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie.

2. The Power of Positive Thinking, by Norman Vincent Peale, who was Trump’s pastor.

3. The Art of the Deal, by Trump and a co-writer.

4. Win Bigly, by Scott Adams.

Win Bigly covers blog posts spread over two years, so, to me at least, it’s worth the $2 just to have it all in one place, and organized.  This is the lens that explains Trump.  You will go “ah-HA!”

Fake pie-in-the-sky altruism on the left.

February 19th, 2019 by Bookslinger

Dr. C nails it again, putting words to thoughts I’ve long held. I’m going to quote him out of sequence a bit, to use his summary as thesis. This illustrates the moral hypocrisy of the leaders of the left; when you look through this lens, you see that they aren’t moral at all.

Thesis/summary:

But, crucially to Leftism’s success, the selfishness is proximate, direct, immediate; while the altruistic, sacrificial morality is abstract, impersonal and remote.

(Backing up a bit:) (more…)

Book rec: The Hacking of the American Mind.

February 16th, 2019 by Bookslinger

by Dr. Robert Lustig. Kindle ebook.
The Hacking of the American Mind: The Science Behind the Corporate Takeover of Our Bodies and Brains.

Discounted at $1.99 for a limited time. Normally $11/$18 paperback/hardcover. 4.5 out of 5 stars, with 135 ratings/reviews.

As with other deals of which Bookbub.com notifies me, I’m passing on the recommendation before fully reading it, due to the limited time of the ebook discount.

He goes into the neuroscence of pleasure, happiness, contentment, addictions, dopamine, serotonin, food, drugs, social media, etc., and how corporate marketing is using media and food itself to alter our biochemistry, driving epidemics of obesity, addiction and depression.

Definitely worth the $1.99. Maybe not the full digital price or as a new physical book.

Bookslinging: Not what you might think.

February 12th, 2019 by Bookslinger

(Or, “How People Learn.”)
(updated Feb 13, 2019, 6:14pm EST.)

I have two purposes in mind in sharing this overview and my other placement/encounter stories:

1) Go thou and do likewise, … or whatever works for you, … and
2) to make known the deeds of the Lord; Psalms 105:1, Isaiah 12:4.

The concept of offering free Bibles and free copies of the Book of Mormon, with no strings attached, to complete strangers is so foreign to most LDS, that I think most people imagine scenarios that are unlike what actually happens.  This is a barrier to them attempting to do this.

I hope to correct some of the mistaken notions that I’ve come across. (more…)

Can’t blame this one on the Russians

February 10th, 2019 by Zen

Regardless of what the Russians may or may not have done with Facebook, it is interesting* to see deliberate explicit attempts to destroy the church on Facebook using deceptive advertising.

The Daily Beast has an article about such an attempt, while not being particularly honest about the doctrine and history themselves.

This also brings strongly to mind what Elder Oaks said (in Arizona this evening) about cell phones being our servants, and not our masters.

* interesting in the same sense, as the Chinese curse ‘May you live in interesting times’

The Fashionable Communist.

February 06th, 2019 by Bookslinger

The glamorous make-up, designer clothes and fawning media attention of Ocasio-Cortez struck a memory chord.  I was finally able to access that dusty memory file…

Nicaraguan communist (Sandinista) Daniel Ortega in the late 70’s and well into the 80’s, with his designer glasses and glamorous wife, was also a darling of U.S. media.  Yes, they really did talk about his glasses.

For EQ Presidents.

February 04th, 2019 by Bookslinger

If I were in your quorum, I would loan you a copy of “This Land of Strangers” by Robert E. Hall, and suggest that you read chapters 11 and 13. It costs about $7 used, including s/h at Amazon, from third party sellers.

Some of my highlighting from chapter 13: (more…)

Bible at restaurant.

February 03rd, 2019 by Bookslinger

Our Sunday meetings run from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.  It’s usually at least 1:15pm by the time I leave the building. And I’m usually hungry. I need to start packing a lunch or snack, because it takes me about an hour to get home. (Ok, I admit to sometimes stopping at restaurants to eat on the way home.) (more…)

Your own spirit and/or the Holy Ghost.

February 02nd, 2019 by Bookslinger

It took me a long time to figure out that when someone speaks by the power of (or under the influence of) the Holy Ghost, that they also are projecting their own spirit in an amplified fashion. (more…)

The Sex v. Gender Identity Paradoxes Come to Light.

February 02nd, 2019 by Bookslinger

Some folks on the Left are finally acknowledging the Gender Identity elephant in the room.

http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/02/andrew-sullivan-the-nature-of-sex.html

I have to admit that I read that with some schadenfreude, while muttering things like “finally someone on the Left is saying the obvious,” “told ya so,” and some other less-kind remarks.

As one of my Catholic friends says: If God doesn’t punish California[/the United States/Western Civ] soon, He’s gonna hafta apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.
