About the man himself, there isn’t much to say that Ross Douthat didn’t already say. I’ll only add that his iconic status should really go beyond the political or the legal. He’s the patron saint of swimming against the tide and doing it magnificently. The tide moves on nonetheless.

As far as the political fallout goes, everyone on the right suddenly has a strong principled opposition to confirming SCOTUS nominations in an election year. Everyone on the left suddenly has a strong principled stance that the president has an absolute right to have his nominees confirmed no matter how much time is left in his term.

This is silly. Everyone knows that if Ruth Ginsburg had died in early 2008, they’d all be arguing the reverse. The Constitution is silent on the matter, so spare me the arguments from abstract principle.

Here is the real argument for blocking Obama’s nominee: The Left’s main path for crushing its enemies has been through the courts. One more leftist on the court gives them free rein. Any Republican who lets in an Obama nominee through the Trojan horse of comity and tradition is a traitor to Christians and everyone else not under the left-wing umbrella, and should be treated accordingly.

“Iran plans to sign contract for Russian S-300 missiles next week”

“Obama: No U.S. drones for ally Jordan”

Gee, who do you think is going to be considered the powerful and reliable ally in the Middle East in the coming decades?

His Majesty’s take on the Iran agreement

July 18th, 2015 by Vader

His Majesty has been shaking his head all week in astonishment.

Has anyone else said this yet?

This agreement takes Obama up a couple of notches in my estimation. I thought he was just another empty suit mouthing silly platitudes and breaking down the culture because he was too dim to appreciate what he was destroying. A bull in a china shop. But this move shows a glimmer of actual evil genius.

Of course Obama knows the Iranians aren’t going to honor the agreement. And Obama knows the Israelis know the Iranians aren’t going to honor the agreement. So the Israelis are going to have to strike the nuclear facilities, because for them, it really is an existential threat. They will calculate that they have no choice.

So the Iranian nuclear threat will be eliminated without Obama getting any (more) tarnish on his Nobel Peace Prize.

And Obama will then, in a burst of self-righteous fury, use that strike as a reason to cut all U.S. ties with Israel. Oh, he’ll offer to maintain ties if Israel gives the Palestinians everything they demand — but that is also an existential threat to the Israelis, who will calculate they have no choice but to refuse.

Israel will then have to look for allies wherever she can find them.

And if she can’t, she’ll have all the nation of the earth arrayed against her. Sounds positively apocalyptic.

The death of Pax Americana

March 24th, 2015 by Vader

There is no way, period, that any lasting settlement between the Israelis and the Palestinians—including one that requires the painful removal of a substantial number of Israeli settlements from the West Bank—will be credible without third-party backing. The United Nations is useless for this purpose, so the only creditable guarantee is an alliance of Western nations led by the United States. Here, the death of Pax Americana is taking its toll. The Israelis and the rest of the world know that the United States will not be a credible guarantor of any peace so long as President Obama remains in office. Such is the legacy of American foreign policy in Syria, Iraq, Iran, Russia, and the Ukraine.

Thus Richard Epstein.

Whose book on constitutional law, The Classical Liberal Constitution, is superb. And thus almost too damn depressing for me to finish reading.

Disparate Impact and the Plenipotent God

January 15th, 2015 by MC

I just realized the connection between two independent ideas, neither completely original, that have been bouncing around in my head for a while.

The first time I really thought about possible racial differences in intelligence was when I picked up my parents’ Newsweek and read the feature on “The Bell Curve,” which had just been released. My thoughts were 1) I wouldn’t really be too surprised if there were IQ differences between races, and 2) why rub it in? What could possibly be the benefit of pointing out such differences? (more…)

Obama meets definition of Satan’s henchman.

November 03rd, 2014 by Bookslinger

Money quote:
“Sometimes, someone, usually mom, leaves the workplace to stay home with the kids, which then leaves her earning a lower wage for the rest of her life as a result. And that’s not a choice we want Americans to make.”
Thus, Barack Hussein Obama.

Definition of Satan’s henchmen from John C. Wright:
“The Progressives in their smirking self-righteous piety and grotesque self-imposed ignorance are henchmen of the devil. Some know it, most do not. They stand between a woman and her human nature, her happiness, her children, and they speak the selfsame lie. The source of your happiness is the barrier to happiness. Destroy the source of your happiness, toss happiness aside, and you will be happy.”
Mr Wright was agreeing with David Warren.

I recommend reading both Wright’s and Warren’s linked articles to get the full picture.

His Majesty is a notable patron of the arts

August 13th, 2014 by Vader

Although his tastes run towards highly abstract art. Symbolic art he tends to dismiss with a snort of disgust, rather as J.R.R. Tolkien was dismissive of literary allegory.

(And I can’t believe I just compared His Majesty to J.R.R. Tolkien. I feel like I need to go scrub my mouth out.)

This morning, over breakfast, he had this to say: “Rather rude of those German artists to preempt the Obama administration.”

It seems His Majesty is as contemptuous of symbolic politics as he is of symbolic art and allegorical literature. Which, come to think of it, sometimes seem like they’re all the same thing.

I don’t recall ever hearing him express an opinion on religious symbolism. He is not a believer, naturally, and I’m not sure I want to broach the topic.
