Hat tip to Ben Carson’s #iamaChristian.

October 03rd, 2015 by Bookslinger

Generally, I don’t like to jump on memes and follow a crowd.  I don’t like fads. I don’t like cheap shows of support or solidarity. If I participate in a meme, it has to be something I already believe in, and it has to be something that I can sincerely encourage others to do that is also for their good.

‘Sides, being a “witness for Christ at all times and in all places”  is a good thing. In the gospel, actions are required in addition to words, but words are still required as part of testimony and witness.

I don’t know if Ben Carson started the #IamaChristian meme/tag, but his photo seems to be in the news. (more…)

Charles Williams and the Athanasian Creed

October 01st, 2015 by Bruce Charlton

The Greater Trumps

This post is intended as a way into understanding the significance of the mystical conceptualization of the Holy Trinity of the traditional Catholic type. It is not a defence of this conceptualization – which I regard as ultimately mistaken, unnecessary and often unhelpful. However, I hope this shows the kind of role such a way of thinking can have in some denominations; so that this may become at least comprehensible, and more sympathetic, perhaps.

The Angels that Pertain to Us

September 11th, 2015 by G.

I like the old, weird Mormonism.  The quirky doctrines that float out there like driftwood, but that tie in profoundly to the gospel when rightly understood.  Things like the three degrees of glory, immortal bodies having flesh but not blood, the devil’s dominion over the waters, the two atonements on the cross and at Gethsemane.

But the author of Mormonism is also the author of mere Christianity.  There’s plenty of quirks there too. (more…)

Mormon Laity, or non-member participation in Mormonism.

March 21st, 2015 by Bookslinger

It has long occurred to me that a non-member participating in Mormonism, to whatever degree a non-member is able to participate, would be better off than were he to participate in other Christian denominations as a lay member.  I put this forth as a postulate. And invite others to help me develop it into a theory.

Nicene Creed: deliberately ambiguous and non-understandable.

January 12th, 2014 by Bookslinger

And how Joseph Smith resolved the need for un-understandable ambiguiity by throwing out the philosophical metaphysics at the core of classical Christianity. An analysis by Bruce Charlton.

Why denying Mormons are Christians is a problem

August 31st, 2012 by Vader

There’s been a fair amount of buzz over the post at Patheos by Ben Witherington, who evidently should know better, barring the gates of Christianity against Mormonism.      (more…)

Peter’s Testimony

June 01st, 2012 by Vader

“Whom do you say that I am?” And Peter said unto him: Thou art very God of very God, the Ultimate Ground of our being.” And Jesus said unto him, “What?”

I heartily recommend the linked work.
