Yes – I’ve just been out to look again before it sets this morning. As bright as any I’ve seen. And a pair of rival nightingales singing their hearts-out…

I went out bike-riding yesterday morning just at dawn, and noticed an oversized crescent moon, something I had never seen before. Not only that, but the dark side of the moon was glowing slightly orange. It was marvelous and I was amazed.

As I rode along I started asking myself, how can this be a crescent moon, with the sun hitting the far side of it, when the sun is on the opposite side of the sky? I almost thought that some kind of miracle was happening, when I said to myself, there must be some explanation.

The explanation of course was that it wasn’t a crescent moon at all, but a full moon in the midst of an eclipse. Thanks to my determination to avoid news the eclipse had slipped my mind. It was the first time I had seen an eclipse by just sort of stumbling upon it, without going out to look at it on purpose.
