Happy with Nothing

January 17th, 2018 by Man SL

I simply do not understand the atheists who say that they are content with the prospect of personal extinction.  Even if they are to be believed, it is certainly not to their credit, but rather betrays a morbid deficit either of imagination or vitality.

-the Bonald.

In two ways atheists are happy with nothing.

“I simply do not understand ” – I understand it, because it was not that long ago that I held the same views.

My current view is that some people really do crave extinction of consciousness; but that a larger proportion of atheists simply don’t believe in the reality, or even the possibility, of life beyond the portals of death.

Most modern people are metaphysical materialists, since that is built-into all mainstream public discourse – materialism is their basic assumption about reality – and assume that if the material body is destroyed then nothing could possibly survive. Until this assumption is made explicit as-an-assumption (and not something for which there is, or could be, ‘evidence’) they are likely to remain trapped by materialism.

I would go a step further, and point out that nihilism is becoming the default assumption in many quarters. Not all certainly, but it is far more mainstream and simply presumed as Scientific than it was before.
