You can stick a fork in the BSA.

They’re done.

If this was that kind of club, I’d probably organize a betting pool on when the Church announces it will drop Scouting entirely. My own bet would be three months.

The one bit of dark amusement in this is the Girl Scouts going completely nonlinear over the prospect of the competition.

I’m excited to watch the competition with the girl scouts. I secretly hope girl scouts gets fully replaced/destroyed by the more agile, bottom up, franchise-like model that allowed the Church to partner with the boy scouts in the first place.

As for combining girls and boys… is this going to be one of those lessons that every generation needs to relearn?

BSA had to do something to offset declining members. Also, it mostly (but not entirely) obviates the transgender issue.

I heard one local troop-level leader say he looked forward to this change as it will make Boy Scouts into a family affair as in “Family Scouting”/”Family Scouts”.

But as conservatives flee BSA, will there be enough non-conservative boys and girls to keep them going? Will the influx of girls from liberal families be enough to offset the decline in boys? Will liberal/middleoftheroad families want to send their girls into this new “Family Scoutng”? Will liberals who formerly avoided scouts now turn to it?

Liberal/middle parents, especially single parents, may see this as a way to at least keep their kids off the streets, and off-load some parenting.

As the target audience shifts left, the policies and principles will have to shift left too. So the BSA as we knew it will no longer exist.

No matter how long it takes the zombie to go down, it was dead all the while.

Which is how I feel about Scouts.

What the scout movement has become has been available for 90 years in the UK as the Woodcract Folk

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Woodcraft_Folk

It was set up by explicitly neo-pagan, environmentalist socialist pacifists – so they tick all the right boxes.

After 90 years they claim 25,000 members (including adults).

I think it will take longer for the Church to drop Scouts altogether. I think they are committed to at least through 2018. If not explicitly, at least implicitly, because they told all the boys that are close to Eagle that they can still finish as Boy Scouts, just not registered as Varsity or Venture. So I think it will be a slower exit than 3 months. But I really know very little about it – I’m just a ward YM leader.

And @ G. – about the zombie? Yes. Exactly right.

I was surprised to find this prayer card at religious store on vacation: https://imgur.com/a/mntXB

Scouts that crush Satan and pray to Jesus? Whoa!

Bruce,

Fascinating to read about Woodcraft Folk. There is nothing quite like it in the States that I am aware of. The BSA national leadership has big corporate, government, and military ties that contrast with Woodcraft. IMHO some of those ties are pulling the BSA away from its earlier religious sensibilities.

Eventually the Church will have to go its own way.

Once BSA let in gay scouts and gay scout leaders, they could hardly leave out the T in LGBT. Once they let in girls who proclaimed themselves boys, they could hardly exclude girls who maintained they were girls. Separate (but “equal”) girls troops can’t last long, and local options will be challenged. There will be full integration, just like in the military. This won’t affect the Cub Scouts as much as it will the Boy Scouts. Eventually the Boy will have to be dropped from the name. It will be Scouts of America. It could be that the girls and girl leaders will be marginalized, or it could be that they will take over as boys and men recede. The Girl Scouts might or might not be folded to the new organization. Atheists and agnostics will continue to erode scoutings religious foundations. In other words, scouting won’t be the same as it was.

The national organization is having to set aside more funds for general liability reserves, while revenues and membership numbers are falling. The organization looks increasingly expensive and top heavy. Conservative and especially conservative religious groups will be less supportive and liberal groups will not be satisfied. Sports, music, the internet, and video games will continue to draw away youth as the organization loses its original focus. Scouting still has considerable numbers and assets, so it will experience a slow death spiral rather than a precipitous collapse, but the decline is inevitable and irreversible.
