Too Many Future Profs

October 04th, 2017 by G.

The New York Times had an interesting editorial on the phenomenon of adjunct and part time faculty being more desperately extremist than their (already fairly extreme) tenured counterparts.

Now, this being the NYT, the take was typically parochial and purblind.  The editorial basically suggested expanding the existing college Ponzi scheme for one more generation, as if the problem with higher education could be fixed by making it more costly and getting an even larger pool of suckers.

The editorial also takes the more-or-less traditional progressive take of “radicalized by their suffering.”  A more likely explanation is that folks who are vying for a very small number of tenure-track posts have to ferociously signal their devotion to academic values as a form of competition.  And academic values aren’t free inquiry or truth or any of that jazz.  Academic values are cliche leftism.  The editorial talks about the Nazism of underemployed intellectuals in Weimar higher education, which is true.  But what the article does not acknowledge is that the fully employed intellectuals of the German higher education system were also far to the right, Wilhelmine and so on.

The fact is, a great many college graduates, not just the part-time profs, are victims of a False Life Script.  Propagating a False Life Script is one of the most evil and damaging things wicked men can do.

What do you mean by a false life script?

Arwen! You were born to go the Havens, not end up barefoot and pregnant with some mortal!

The NYT article isn’t just wrong – it is clinically delusional. The fact that such articles have been the norm for the past 2-3 generations doesn’t make any difference to that basic fact.

As Rudolf Steiner said 100 years ago; Not to believe in God is to be physically ill; it is literally a pathological state – and this article is one of the characteristic manifestations in a world of such people.

(I was one of them for many years – so I am familiar with the symptoms.)

Overproduction of elites is never a good thing. See Turchin.

But insane elites is worse.

@Arwen, a false life script is a plan or model for the stages of your life that is delusional.
