I Deserved

September 07th, 2017 by G.

I’m reading Montefiore’s Court of the Red Tsar.  Stalin had a habit of killing the secret police chief who ran the last terror during each new terror.  In 1937 his former General-Commissar for State Security, Yagoda, was arrested, run through the normal beating process, and scheduled to be shot.  He made this statement.

You can put down in your report to Yezhov that I said there must be a God after all.  From Stalin I have deserved nothing but gratitude for my faithful service; from God, I have deserved the most severe punishment for having violated his commandments thousands of times.  Now look where I am and judge for yourself.
