Great is the Sun

August 28th, 2017 by G.

Great is the sun, and wide he goes
Through empty heaven with repose;
And in the blue and glowing days
More thick than rain he showers his rays.

-Thus RLS

It has to get down into the 80s, low 90s at most, before you can have this feeling of the sun being hot but not horrible. It’s a pretty English sentiment.

Or else you have to be sick or old.

Exactly! In So Cal you have this phenomenon of the weather forecasters talking about what a “nice” or “gorgeous” weekend it’s going to be when temperatures are in the 90s. Eventually I realized it’s because they live on the westside, near the ocean, where it’s 10 to 20 degrees cooler than the inland regions but also way too expensive for us average joes. So for them a 95-degree day may be only an 80-degree day, which probably is indeed “gorgeous”.
