Was just listening to a motivational talk by Hyrum W Smith:
“Character is the ability to carry out a decision after the emotion of the decision has passed.”

I had a marvelous conversation with a friend at work a while ago. She is Jewish but sounded like a talk in sacrament meeting as she explained this. In talking about marriage vows, she got rather animated as she explained that promises can’t be discarded because things get hard or your spouse “changes” or whatever else – that was the whole point of the promise in the first place. If we expected things to stay perfect forever, we wouldn’t need to promise that we would stay and work at it – we would stay and work at it just because it was still perfect and happy.

This is enormous power in keeping promises.
