Isaiah ch. 19

March 12th, 2017 by Zen

I have been working on a kind of translation of Isaiah for a while now. Too many of us don’t read it, and liken it to ourselves, because it is hard to understand. My goal is to remove as many as possible steps between reading and understanding. This entails a significant degree of simplification (for instance, where I give modern equivalents to ancient things), but it also makes it easier to understand on the first read through. At least I hope it does.

Notice, that Isaiah is the master of the prophecy with dual fulfillment. This is a legitimate prophecy of socio-political events in Egypt in Isaiah’s time. But the more interesting and more complete fulfillment is a country in the last days that is the modern equivalent of ancient Egypt. Namely, the greatest world power, the center of education and culture but waning as to its influence. The center of education and culture. This is America.

Isaiah 19

1 The prophecy about America. The Lord will come swiftly, like a sudden storm into America and those things idolized by Americans will quake in terror. The Americans will be terrified.

2 I will set the Americans to fight against each other. Brother will fight against brother, neighbor against neighbor, city against city and state against state.

3 They will no courage or confidence and I will make their plans become useless. They will seek help from anything other than me. They will seek help from experts, authorities and professionals.

4 I will give a cruel dictator complete power over America, and a tyrant will rule them, declares the Lord of Heaven.

5 The backbone of the country will crumble. Those things they have depended on will evaporate away.

6 Your stockpiles will stink and your supplies will wither away. Everything is dying.

7 The national industries you are known for, will wither and disappear.

8 Your farms and sources of food and wealth will dry up and disappear. Your sources of food and wealth will vanish.

9 The economy collapses. There is no manufacturing. There is no work or income for anyone.

10 The foundations of society are broken and crumbling to nothing, from the upper class to the lower class, rich and poor; all of them suffer.

11 The bureaucrats of Washington, DC are complete fools. The highly educated advisors give stupid advice. How can you say to the President, “I have an Ivy League education. I am a student of the Founding Fathers”?

12 Where are your experts now? Please, let them tell you what God has planned, what the Lord of Heaven is going to do to America.

13 The politicians of Washington, DC are fools. The leaders of in the Capitol are deluded. The leaders of this people have led them astray.

14 The Lord has sent confusion and chaos so that they blunder in everything they do, like a drunkard staggers in his own vomit.

15 There is nothing that America can do. Powerful or weak, rich or poor, they are all helpless.

16 In that day, the Americans will be weaklings. They will cower with fear because of what the Lord is doing to America.

17 The people of God will be a terror to America. Everyone that mentions them, will be afraid, because of what God has planned for America.

18 Yet in that day there will be a small number of cities that will speak the language of the scriptures and they will covenant with the Lord. And one of the cities will be called the City of the Sun.

19 In that day there will be an altar to the Lord in America, and there will be a monument to the Lord on America’s border.

20 It will be a sign and as a witness that the Lord of Heaven is worshiped in the land of America. And when they cry to the Lord because of those who oppress them, he will send a savior, a great defender, and he will deliver them.

21 In that day, Lord will be known to America and the Americans will know the Lord. They will worship him with sacrifice and offerings. They will covenant with the Lord, and they will keep those covenants.

22 The Lord will wound America. He will wound it and heal it. And they shall return to the Lord. He will hear their prayers and heal them.

23 In that day, there will be a highway from America to Assyria*. The Assyrian will freely travel to America and the Americans will freely travel to Assyria and the Americans will worship the Lord together with the Assyrians.

24 In that day, Israel will be an ally with America and Assyria and will be a blessing in the midst of them.

25 The Lord of Heaven shall bless them, saying, “Blessed be America, my people and Assyria, the work of my own hands, and Israel, my inheritance.

*I am bold enough to say Egypt = America, but I am not clear on the identity of Assyria, except that they are probably a geo-political foe(s).

At the risk of sounding narcissistic, I wonder if I could get a little feedback from you guys, about this. I wasn’t sure if this was just something where no response came to mind, or if you guys genuinely differed on the interpretation of the chapter.

There was at least a part or aspect of Rev Wright’s (Obama’s pastor) “God Damn America” sermon that actually does make sense. The United States, and the West in General, has been partaking in all the sins warned against in Leviticus, Isaiah and other parts of the Bible.

I think Wright was taken out of context and criticized unfairly. Of course God will have to damn America for our collective sins in order to be a just God. The process is under way, the ground work is being laid. Some of the plagues are already extant.

Why should we expect to avoid the punishments of Egypt, Sodom, Gomorrah, Babylon, the Nephites, etc., if we commit the same sins? God is no respecter of persons.

We touched on this a few years ago.
http://www.jrganymede.com/2013/06/26/prediction/
where you mention Isaiah 19 in the comments. Thanks for bringing it up again.

Two BoM passages indicate it does apply to us,
http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/1.20?lang=eng
and http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/45.15-16?lang=eng

Moses also gets into it, http://www.lds.org/scriptures/ot/lev/26?lang=eng
which I think can be applied to any group that has the gospel/commandments and turns away from them.

Rev Jeremiah Wright’s sermon, along with an interview with Bill Moyers, and transcripts of both, is here

Rev _Joe_ Wright gave a good summary of our national sins in this controversial prayer in 1996:

which is a version of a prayer given by Bob Russell in 1995.

For what it’s worth, I’ve been thinking about this post a lot, and talked about it with my wife. I can’t get into Isaiah somehow. And while I can’t vouch for the accuracy of your restatement, it feels right.
