Trump is assembling an economics team of mostly Democrats and independents who favor a central industrial policy.

His Majesty: “Everything is proceeding as I have foreseen. Mwah hah hah hah!”

A thing I’ve had to remind myself repeatedly since the election is “Just because those people oppose Trump, that still doesn’t mean he’s any good.” A lot of the right has been projecting their political hopes onto Trump, even some who had seemed rational. Maybe something to do with despair leading to hate turning to stupidity.

It is important to remember that salvation will not come through Washington DC. Trump has not changed the course of this nation. There is far too much momentum built up over 10’s and 100’s of years. The only thing Trump has done, is make that fact obvious to half the political spectrum.

Trump is not an establishment conservative or a libertarian. He is a populist and a nationalist. So his economic team doesn’t surprise me. We shall see if his program works or not. I hope it does. I can’t guarantee it will.

My experience from years ago in industry is that Japan and Germany had ways to protect their markets that made US efforts to buy American look feeble in comparison, while at the same time we were footing the bill for their defense. The Marshall Plan for rebuilding the European economy after WW II was a great idea, but we have to think about rebuilding our own economy.

Trump has excellent negotiating skills. I just hope he negotiates for the right things, both foreign and domestic. Obama pretty much gave away the store to Iran, Russia, and China.

The Iran nuclear “deal”, not responding to Russia’s agression in Ukraine/Crimea, and not responding (or too little too late) to China’s salami slicing style of bullying in the South China Sea are all going to come back and bite us. Those are the three main ticking time-bombs that O gave us.

We actually have and had have defense treaties with the Philippines and with Ukraine to defend them against invasion that we did not honor. Russia stole Crimea, and invaded eastern Ukraine, and China stole shoals within the 200 mile territorial limit of Philippines, and built islands on them and armed them. Our “freedom of navigation” exercises around those man-made islands was too little too late.

Paroling hardened terrorists from Gitmo might be number 4, but at least we’ll have the chance to drone them whackamole style if they pop their heads up again. Come to think of it, a hellfire missile might be cheaper than a few years of incarceration
