Fist time I have ever seen the Victorian English praised for their free-and-easy child rearing practices! Only compared with the Germans were we liberated. I think the real reason for the legendarily-devastating attractiveness of English men abroad (!) must lie elsewhere.

Goethe himself was, of course, very attractive to some women – a decade ago I ‘edited’ and posted online the English version of a once influential book (especially among the New England Transcendentalists) written by one of the young women most obviously smitten by the (by then ancient) Goethe.
