Remember the old Leftist canard about school bake sales?

It will be a great day when our schools get all the money they need and the air force has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber.

Looks like that one’s out the window now.

The first time I saw that particular piece of yearning on a bumper sticker, in 1993, was a couple years after I had read Isara: A Voyage Around Essay by the Nigerian Nobelist Wole Soyinka, which is about the author’s father, a school headmaster, when he and his friends were young men moving into roles of community leadership. There is a bit in the book that mentions progress of a fundraiser to buy a Spitfire for the Royal Air Force, an African village in the British Empire doing its part to support the war. OK, it was a fighter and not a bomber, but still probably not the day the bumper sticker writer was dreaming of, and if a village in Nigeria was collecting to donations to buy a fighter, there must have been other places, perhaps in India or Jamaica, collecting donations to buy a Lancaster to bomb Germany.

Last line from the link: “Said Tennessee’s Mr. Sevier: ‘It’s not like we’re going to have a brigade of black helicopters coming in to check.’”

Mr. Sevier doesn’t read Mark Steyn.
