It is all media hype. New atheist churches in the USA will never get off the ground due to fierce competition from already-well-established atheist churches such as The Episcopal Church and Unitarian Universalists. They’ve got nicer buildings, too.

I dunno. I see it as a new creation as opposed to a degraded version/denomination of Christianity. If I understand correctly, Episcopalianism and UUism are descended from, what were at one point, mainstream Christians. Or, in Book of Mormon terms, the Episcopalians and UUs, as organizations or movements, “dwindled in unbelief.” These new organizations are new aglomerations of atheists: atheism organized as opposed to Christianity corrupted.

So maybe the Nehors parallel is a stretch.

@Bookslinger – Just to clarify I was making a joke at the expense of the Eps and UUs – I wasn’t making a serious point.

But this won’t work because the Left (which began rooted in anti-Christianity and continues as such) is not about doing sensible things that build community etc. – it (i.e Satan) wants us all atomized, isolated, lonely, miserable, desperate…

Not so sure Bruce Charlton,

I thought Satan would be happy with us apart from God. He doesn’t care if why war with or congregate with others, so long as we do it in God’s absence, physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally.

Incrementalism, BC. And, according to Screwtape, doesn’t Satan take satisfaction in making any man “less good”, even if it’s just one step ? Keeping a man from the official authorized church, but allowed to be in a “mere Christian” church. Or from a “mere Christian” church, but allowed to be in an apostate church. Or from an apostate church, but allowed to be in an atheist “church”. Etc.

Satan is never original. All his lies seem to be a twisting or perversion of a true principle. (Eg., communism is a perversion of when the saints held all things in common.) I forget where I read that. That may be a CS Lewis postulate.

Sounds like Tolkien, but it’s not like the two might not have shared some ideas.

I don’t know how many times I have had discussions with atheists who swore that atheism was not a religion or a belief.

I can at least discuss things politely with the Old Atheists who were simply those without spiritual experience. In contrast, the New Atheists are hateful and spiteful to the very idea of religion and seems bouyed by pride and a feeling of superiority, even when their arguments are weak and nonsensical. The Old Atheists would not have put up with that for long.

Perhaps the word Anti-theist would be a better term for the New Atheists.
