I don’t know which bothers me more: That Americans are now increasingly required to carry papers, or that New Mexico seems happy to issue what amounts to fradulent papers to illegal immigrants.

I know which one bothers me more. A driver’s license shouldn’t mean anything more than that the holder is believed likely to drive safely; it wouldn’t bother me if their use was abandoned altogether. Instead we treat driving as a government-granted privilege to which we can attach any requirement we wish, such as being paid up on child support.
