Damning? Perhaps, but also, easily fixed and not harmful. It is just methane. I would worry more about asphyxiation than any kind of poisoning.

And no, the odor you smell when someone farts is not methane. Methane is odorless. You are smelling hydrogen sulfide, among other things.
