I heard that back in the 1970's, baptisms went up in cities after a Donnie and Marie concert.

(That's Donnie and Marie _Osmond_, for those of you too young to remember their TV show.)

I hope 'slinger is right. Sharing a ride to the temple man years ago, I asked a woman in my ward who I didn't know much how she came into contact with the church. It was a tabloid news program about the Hofmann forgeries and bombings. Each description of the church—led by a prophet, new scriptures, temple rituals—left her thinking that she could be a member of a church like that.

Romney made his own choice to run for President, which may or may not have been inspired.

The Church made its own choice to run the "I am a Mormon" campaign, which I am convinced was inspired.

There was no collusion between Romney and the Church either way, at least not on this side of the veil. This does not rule out the likelihood that the coincidence of the two campaigns was providential.
