Why do you say we deserve salvation? It seems to me it is gift we attain in spite of ourselves.
Precisely.

Is the problem sin per se? I have a sneaking suspicion that future generations will look at us (church members) and wonder why were were so wicked.

Vader: Why do you say we deserve salvation? It seems to me it is gift we attain in spite of ourselves. Well, in spite of myself at least.

I would put it a bit differently: All of us deserve salvation, not for anything we've accomplished, but because God loves us and wants us to be happy.

However, some of us will refuse part or all of the salvation offered us.

I don't think it's just Jacob . . . we're all pretty awful human creatures. None of us deserve salvation. All of us have "shady" sides.

Maybe, because all of us are woeful, God doesn't tell us not to be born, but rather to change, to put away childish things, to wash, make clean, "put away the evil of our doings from before [God's] face."

Perhaps Jacob was enabled because of his ability to be friends with God, not because of a perfect life.

Adam became a better friend to Eve because of the fall.
