Football, the Beautiful Game

December 21st, 2011 by G.

Football is an American art form, like opera for Italians. As with so many other areas of American life, its beauty is unplanned and emerges from vicious competition for total victory. But with a underlying recognition that business is just business, after all.

I got talking football with His Majesty over breakfast this morning. (He is naturally a big fan, though I don’t much follow sports myself.) I mentioned this post, and he positively chortled with glee. “Football as the American giuoco belle! That should have the Europeans positively stuttering with indignant cultural outrage!”

(His Majesty pretty much always approves of making the European intelligentsia stutter.)

Lord Vader’s accusation that I am getting an unwholesome pleasure out of shocking the sensibilities of dirty foreigners is as unkind as it is subtle as it is true.
