SPB: I don't see your (1), but I do see your (2).

I see it more as the writers "sticking it to" gentiles/Protestants/Catholics. They're making more fun of them than of us, because the statement is voiced by a third party.

BTW, here's a link to the particular clip in the South Park episode where the cruise director in hell gives "The Mormons" answer:

Some LDS film-maker needs to do a short film on the experiences of various people upon entering the Spirit World. Such as atheists immediately realizing that there is life after death. After all Christopher Hitchens said that he likes surpises.

Southpark did it first. The comedy (such as it is) in both this and the Southpark bit depend on tension between the statement (Mormonism is actually true!) and things like (1) the theological respectability/arrogance of majority religions, and (2) the assumption that the audience understands that Mormonism is not only untrue, but preposterous.

Thus, to me, cracks like this are mildly amusing for reasons neither intended by the writer and nor understood by a vast majority of the audience.

If the arguments that we're in a time of cultural stagnation have anything to them, Saturday Night Live's contintued place in the cultural firmament makes a strong case for it. Most of the cast is younger than the show. It's nearly 30 years since John Belushi died. It's also weird that The Simpsons lasted 20 years; that should put it in the class of things it's supposed to mock.
