Abortion Strategery

October 24th, 2011 by Adam Greenwood

My rube friends are fighting the good fight in Mississippi, but foolishly. Their political thinking is as harmless as a dove but distinctly lacking the wisdom of serpents. (more…)

An Appreciation of Justice Clarence Thomas

October 21st, 2011 by Adam Greenwood

Justice Thomas is a jurist in full. As a lawyer I admire his understanding of the law. But though I disagree with his constitutional interpretations on many things–the Confrontation Clause, sentencing fact-finding, the right to anonymity–I look to him most as an examplar of fidelity to the oath he and I have both taken to the Constitution. God speed his pen.

Excerpt from Dillard’s Total Eclipse

October 21st, 2011 by John Mansfield

[The paragraph below comes from Teaching a Stone to Talk by Annie Dillard. The eclipse next May 20 will be annular, not total, so there will be no screaming.]

The second before the sun went out we saw a wall of dark shadow come speeding at us. We no sooner saw it than it was upon us, like thunder. It roared up the valley. It slammed our hill and knocked us out. It was the monstrous swift shadow cone of the moon. (more…)

Another tyrant bites the dust

October 20th, 2011 by Vader

Muammar Qaddafi reported dead.

I hope, when my times comes, that it is not said of me that the greatest blessing I bestowed on the world was leaving it.

His Majesty: “You won’t care. You’ll be dead.”

“A Potemkin aristocracy”

October 19th, 2011 by Vader

Brought to us by our educational credential fetish.

His Majesty: “I prefer a midichlorian-based aristocracy. With a very limited number of members.”

“The new Gypsies”

October 19th, 2011 by Vader

Millionaires.

His Majesty: “That’s not the correct spelling for Jews.”

For my Imperial readers: Read Jawa for Gypsy.

Yes. It’s an old pattern seen across the wicked universe.

Income inequality a myth?

October 19th, 2011 by Vader

Maybe.

His Majesty: “It’s no myth. And a great deal of bipartisan political capital has been spent ensuring that there continues to be a huge income gap between the United States and most of the rest of the world.”

Is this the “Mormon Moment”?

October 17th, 2011 by Vader

Maybe, considering the number of celebrities speaking of their “Mormon roots” in spite of having not seen the inside of a Mormon ward building in years.

His Majesty: “Maybe they were afraid they’d see you there.”

Ouch.

“A world of brilliant colors”

Some fascinating information on medieval use of color.

I am myself fond of futuristic shades of black and white.

Too connected

October 17th, 2011 by Vader

I’m a pretty connected Sith. I mean, when I plug myself into a TIE Fighter, I actually plug myself in to a TIE Fighter. And while it’s true that listening to His Majesty read the morning paper can be awfully entertaining, there are times when he starts to monologue, and then I’m grateful I can secretly switch my photoreceptors to satellite television. Though I have to be careful; it would be all too easy for him to snap out a sudden order at me, and for me to reflexively respond Jawohl, mein Fuhrer before dragging my mind out of the latest offering from The History Channel.

But even so, I think it’s possible to be way too connected.

h/t The 99 Percent, who have written a thoughtful essay on the disappearance of private space.

Which naturally leads to the topic of sacred space, which in turn leads to the topic of the Temple. But while I’m sure you all are curious how they accomodate me when I attend an endowment session, I’ll save that for another day.
