An Appreciation of Justice Clarence Thomas

October 21st, 2011 by Adam G.

Justice Thomas is a jurist in full. As a lawyer I admire his understanding of the law. But though I disagree with his constitutional interpretations on many things–the Confrontation Clause, sentencing fact-finding, the right to anonymity–I look to him most as an examplar of fidelity to the oath he and I have both taken to the Constitution. God speed his pen.

If there can only be one “greatest living American”, I prefer he be on the Court.

Three cheers for Clarence Thomas! The man refuses to be cowed by his vicious critics on the left just as he refuses to capitulate on popular yet unconstitutional policy fads from the right. I admire his courage, humility, intellectual rigor and most of all his *fidelity* to the Constitution.
