Moral dilemmas

James Lileks does the right thing, in a mean petty way

As Screwtape pointed out, most of the damned will not even have the satisfaction of being damned for something spectacular and memorable. It will be the accumulation of mean petty sins that brings them down.

It occurs to me that there is a symmetry here. Most of the exalted will not be burdened with the temptation to spiritual pride of being exalted for something spectacular and memorable. It will be the accumulation of mean petty virtues that raises them up.

Oh, and the last time I pointed out to someone that they had left the antiglare coating off my new set of plastic bug eyes, they offered me their entire company by way of apology. I confess I was not so virtuous as to refuse the opportunity to get a grip on their assets.

I do not think that link goes where you meant it to go.
