I also made sure to watch the program. It seemed like a 4th of July Program. As a patriotic American, with a family history in the military and being on more domestic and overseas US bases than I can count, I was actually wincing in behalf of all those overseas Saints who actually wanted to pay respect to the Pioneers with their families.

It's hard enough to convey respect of the Pioneers outside of the USA to people who just don't get why we should care about some people in America moving to Utah. When you point out how strangely similar the Pioneer experinece mimics and is a type of the Children of Israel experience it makes sense.

A study of the Pioneers has as much revelance as a study of the Children of Israel journeying to the promised land. Sure we actually aren't obssessed with the land and the people, but the principles and the stories demonstrate much faith and other principles about God and life we can understand.

For some baffling reason, nearly beyond comprehension, instead of talking about these spiritual principles and histories the primary focus was on how great freedom in the USA is and how blessed a nation the USA is. I don't have a problem with these things actually. I think you could substitute USA for a dozen or more other nations as well. Not that the USA does not play a special role and I'm not downplaying it.

But seriously, if you're going to give a raw-raw-go-America program, at list turn to the doctrines in the OT and BoM and D&C which point to it. There are many. The program seemed to miss the mark.
