Crucifixion was not only intended to be extremely painful, but also terribly humiliating. That's a slightly different sense of "below all things."

I've found myself wondering about the symbolism of the God of Israel being put to death by Israel's oppressor. The symbolism becomes problematic when you consider that Israel's King was put to death by Israel's oppressor at the instigation of the King's would-be rivals. I will have to think about that one.

I've thought that since Christ was to have descended below all, that that implied that crucifixion was the most painful physical death possible.

More on various interpretations of the significance of the Garden of Gethsemane and the Crucifixion:
http://www.jrganymede.com/2011/03/14/the-problem-of-evil-in-the-mouth-of-babes/
http://timesandseasons.org/index.php/2006/06/why-bread-and-water-in-the-sacrament/ (see the comments)

There may also be some kind of parallel between Christ's dual nature, half-mortal, half-divine, and his spiritual suffering in the garden that overflowed into physical agony (sweat like blood) and his physical suffering on the cross that overflowing into a feeling of spiritual abandonment.
