Lines I Wish I Had Written

May 24th, 2010 by Adam Greenwood

“Which prompts the thought that the Europeans are post-Christian in this sense, too: they have tried to “liberate” themselves from the curse of Adam by substituting borrowing for working, and from the curse of Eve by not having children. It was entirely foreseeable that neither of these efforts would end well.” (more…)

Obama Fakes Religious Devotion

May 24th, 2010 by Bruce Nielson

I voted for Obama and I confess I loved his famous speech on religion in America.

So this Freakonomics podcast episode about how he wasn’t even an active Church goer, but covered that fact up, is a little disappointing. Ah well, you know what you’re getting when you vote for any politician I suppose.

Salary Markets

May 20th, 2010 by Adam Greenwood

Something like this (for-profit lenders taking a share in your future income in return for paying for your education) strikes me as a much better way of financing education than loans and subsidies to everybody. But there’s a lot of devils to be worked out of the details and at the endpoint you run into a 13th Amendment problem.

The novel that inspired the discussion apparently has parents getting a share of their kids’ future too. It sounds distasteful to our sensibilities, but I think its a wonderful idea.

Supreme Court Upholds Incarceration of “Sexually Dangerous” Ex-Cons.

May 17th, 2010 by Bertie

One never quite understands the American delight in banging on about their Constitution, not that I say a word against it, an inestimable document of the inestimablest, but for those who like that sort of thing this is now oojah-cum-spiff.
