Guadalcanal secured

67 years ago today.  

Guadalcanal was the turning point of the Pacific War. Midway, though a decisive naval victory, merely restored the balance of power in the Pacific. Not that that wasn’t important, or as much as Nimitz had any right to expect going into the campaign.

It’s sobering to realize that the youngest veterans of that campaign are now 85 years old.
