Have we ever had a President melt down?

I don’t think even Nixon at the end truly “melted down.”

We’ve had Presidents break down physically, like Roosevelt and Wilson, but not suffer mental collapse.

Could Obama be the first?

Much as I dislike his policies, I certainly hope not. If only for two reasons: Joe. Biden.

Actually, I saw a pro-Reagan documentary that claimed Reagan more or less suffered a full break down (not merely a meltdown) during the height of Iran Contra. When his staff changed over, the new head of staff was under orders to determine if he should be impeached due to inability to function.

The change of staff and the new energy caused Reagan to completely recover and there was no need at all for action against him. A temporary break down does not a bad president make.
