Dean of Harvard Medical School nixes Obamacare.

In a sane world, this would end the debate.

In discussions with dozens of health-care leaders and economists, I find near unanimity of opinion that, whatever its shape, the final legislation that will emerge from Congress will markedly accelerate national health-care spending rather than restrain it. Likewise, nearly all agree that the legislation would do little or nothing to improve quality or change health-care’s dysfunctional delivery system.

I’m curious what the more conservative point of view is on why the US supposedly has larger health care spending but lower results than the socialist bloc.

Define results.

from what I can tell, the conservative arguments are usually something like, (1) we keep better statistics, so that, e.g., our infant survival rate is lower because we count preemies as infants, and preemies often die, (2) we’re much more litigative so doctors charge more to cover their malpractice insurance and we end up doing more unnecessary procedures, (3) Americans are whiny entitlement hounds, so we demand more unnecessary procedures and unnecessary care, (4) paradoxically, prolonging people’s lives tends to lead to worse overall average health in the population while increasing costs, (5) the American population is different from European ones–if you just compare American caucasians to European caucasians, e.g., the disparities tend to disappear, (6) our healthcare costs more because we are effectively subsidizing their medical research, (7) Americans lead higher-stress, lonelier lives and eat garbage by the gross, (8) American health care either doesn’t really cost more when you include hidden costs, etc., or (9) when you look closely, e.g., at some kinds of cancer treatments, American outcomes are better, or (10) them durn foreigners lower their costs by doing jerk things like making doctors work for little

Whether any of this is true or not, I do not know and have not bothered to find out.
