Hatch urges Obama to investigate BCS

October 22nd, 2009 by Vader

Because we all know the Federal Government has nothing more important to worry about than how the college football champion is selected.

I think Hatch has just transformed himself into an argument for term limits. He’s clearly passed his “best-used-by” date.

But then I find it reprehensible that big-money sports has become entangled with academia in the first place. Give me a BYU football team that loses every game, so we can keep the emphasis on first-rate education and scholarship!

(And, on recent evidence, it appears that at least half of my wish is already well on its way to coming true.)

I agree it’s kind of sad that schools don’t field teams made up of players who just happen to go to that school, but instead scour the country searching high and low for the best players, and offer them every allowable incentive to attend their school. Even though the players aren’t paid, it seems to professionalize college sports, which takes a lot of the fun out of it.

Public high schools, I believe, for the most part, still field teams made up of students who just happen to attend that school, because you’re not allowed to attend schools outside your geographical district. But private schools can still actively recruit players from any geographical area, which I think is why private schools tend to dominate high school sports, at least here in So. Cal.

I enjoy following college ball more than the NFL, specifically because the players are younger and less jaded, and because they’re not paid. But the one thing I don’t enjoy is seeing certain schools year after year being unable to compete for championships, just because they don’t happen to be rich or have name recognition, and therefore can’t compete for the elite players.

But I guess it’s the logical result of schools competing against each other: You can’t truly compete without doing your best to get the best players in order to defeat your opponents. If you don’t do that you are hamstringing yourself, witness the Ivy League.
