at the movies

I just watched the John Dillinger picture Public Enemies. It had the same message as most Hollywood pictures since Bonnie and Clyde: It’s better to be cool than to be good. It was repugnant.

I usually end up half rooting for the bad guys in Hollywood flics. The advantage of movies like these is that the bad guys are the good guys and win in the end.

Among the picture’s lesser sins is that it cheats our man Inspector Cowley. In the movie, George Nelson is shot by Purvis at the Little Bohemia retreat in Wisconsin, instead of by Cowley in the Battle of Barrington.

On the plus side, the movie did make use of some very nice locations in Wisconsin.

Lesser sins? Since our man Crowley is an official blog hero, I cannot see this as other than a deliberate affront.

Our man Cowley, you mean. I presume that Crowley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleister_Crowley) is not an official Junior Ganymede blog hero.

Er, well . . ahem.
I’m sure that Aleister Crowley and our bumptious Mormonism are perfectly compatible.

“It seemed as if I had somehow turned a tap. From
this time on I lived in a perfect shower of diplomas, from Bucharest
to Salt Lake City. I possess more exalted titles than I have ever been
able to count. I am supposed to know more secret signs, tokens,
passwords, grand-words, grips, and so on, than I could actually learn
in a dozen lives. An elephant would break down under the insignia I am
entitled to wear.”

1. PUBLIC ENEMY was shot using HD video, not film
2. Therefore it is a video, not a film, no matter what the betrayers of cinema claim
3. Therefore I will never see it and
4. therefore it is no good.
